MY FAVOURITE EVER STAND UP SET

I used to do stand up. Sometimes I’d do a “normal” set with coherently rendered thoughts that had some purpose to further ideas. Other times I’d do a stupid set of silliness filled with bollocks. Anyway, I’ve found some material from one of these sets which I present today unchanged as today’s substack. Cliched as it sounds, so much of the comedy was in the delivery, the manipulation of rhythmical expectations and the subtle physicality accompanying the material. There are some “set pieces” in there that involved a “bit”. These involved a performance element that was more than just words. You’ll see the title of these bits in bold text. I obviously knew what the bit involved but didn’t write it down. I’ll let you embrace the mystery of what these bits might feature. If you see me though, feel free to ask what the history of rock and roll was, what my burlesque act consisted of and what a country and western handjob is. Anyway. I think some of the stupidity lifts off the page. It made me chuckle here and there to read and remember. I think I enjoyed doing this kind of set the most because not only could you jump around as you felt out the room and your own mood, there was no pressure. I wasn’t trying to communicate anything of value, engage in anything contentious, or seek to persuade people of something. It was pure bollocks and allowed me to access a more clownish territory in my soul that is closer to the spirit than it is to logic. Hope you enjoy…
